Session Formats

  • Protocol development sessions during which each participant, having previously developed a draft, completes the writing of a research proposal according to NIH guidelines by the end of the Workshop. This activity constitutes the core activity of the Workshop and allows participants to apply the lessons learned in the didactic sessions.
  • Lectures and panel discussions on specific topics presented by experts in the field. These talks give participants an essential overview of the field and the principles of research design and grant writing. Some lectures are followed by panel discussions so that participants and faculty can explore issues in greater depth.
  • Small group discussion sessions on special topics such as outcome measures, translational research, and clinical pharmacology. These sessions treat topics that are essential to the success of many different kinds of rehabilitation research protocols or offer an opportunity for in-depth discussion on topics of special interest. Attendance will be limited to maximize dialogue.
  • Individual mentoring. Each participant will be assigned an experienced mentor who will provide individual counseling, detailed critique, and guidance throughout the week.
  • Mock study section. Led by NIH-NCMRR staff, participants will observe a group of experienced study section researchers review and score a proposal.
